First Stops: Australia & New Zealand

Kauri Cliffs

I love playing golf, so I couldn’t resist getting a round in at Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand, one of the world’s top golf courses. Kauri Cliff has hosted several PGA Tour events, and once you play 18 holes here, you will see why.

There are fifteen holes with views of the Pacific Ocean. Six of these holes are played alongside the cliffs. Bring your best game when you play here. The wind can make every hole play differently from hour to hour.

The Great Barrier Reef

There may be no greater place in the world to dive than The Great Barrier Reef. It’s the worlds largest and healthiest coral reef system approximately 135,000 square miles. You can see just about every kind of fish.

The water is much warmer during the December-February period. (Their summer is our winter.) But June-November is good for whale spotting. And for experienced divers, there are plenty of shipwreck sites to visit.

Gordon Dam

This is the Gordon Dam in Tasmania. Tasmania is actually an island just south of Australia. Daredevils like to rappel down 460 feet to the bottom. It’s the world’s highest dam that you can climb down. (In Australia, they call it “abselling.”)

You’ll feel butterflies in your stomach the first time you climb over the railing.  You are about 35 stories off the ground. But once you start making your way down, the views are unparalleled. You’ll see Lake Gordon and its surroundings in a completely different way.
