Dominican Delight If you really need a reason to visit the shores of the Dominican Republic, try golfing Casa de Campo

The “Teeth of the Dog” course at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic may look spectacular and serene – but don’t be fooled, this course has bite.  Widely recognized as the best golf course in the Caribbean, the Pete Dye-designed course has set the standard by which other seaside courses are judged.

Teeth of the Dog is set against a background of lush palms and the glistening turquoise sea.  Conceptualized and designed more than 40 years ago, Dye still considers the course his masterpiece.  This 7,500-yard, par-72 course has seven holes on the ocean, three of which rank among the most spectacular par 3s you’ll ever play. Ponds, cleverly-shaped bunkers, and variable trade winds along the park-like grounds provide plenty of challenges for even the best golfers.  Six different tee combinations provide a setup for every player and level of play.

Built by hand without the use of heavy machinery in the early 1970s, the course was carved out of the jungle by 300 laborers.  Using pickaxes, sledgehammers, and hand chisels, they sculpted the seven holes along the coast from the natural coral base.  To keep the Teeth of the Dog competitive with today’s athletes and equipment, Dye updated the course in 2006, shutting the course to play and re-opening with added length on the front nine.

After a day on the links, retire to the luxurious Casa de Campo resort—a tropical playground with world-class toys where guests are invited to enjoy boating, deep-sea fishing, tennis, and equestrian activities.  Those with a sense of history will be inclined to travel to Altos de Chavon, a 16th century replica of the Mediterranean village of Portofino, perched high above the Chavon River to explore its unique architectural features.  Or simply experience the ultimate in relaxation on one of several private, white sand beaches while sipping on a tropical, masterfully mixed cocktail.  Casa de Campo makes for a perfect island gold getaway during winter’s toughest months.
